Capt. Charles Hertel was born on October 28th, 1993 in Miami Florida and was raised in the heart of the Florida Keys, Islamorada. At the age of four he started fishing with his grandfather and father, both avid outdoorsmen. In his early teenage years he was taken under the wing of famous Islamorada guide Captain Rich Tudor of Saltwater Experience as well as Captain Mark Cockerham of Key Hopper Charters. From these two experienced keys guides as well as the teachings of his grandfather and father, Captain Charles learned the ropes of fishing Islamorada and Everglades National Park.
After graduating from high school in 2012 he moved to Orlando, Florida to attend the University of Central Florida (GO KNIGHTS!) where he earned a degree in business management. During his time at UCF he became President of the UCF Fishing Club, the “UCF Reel Knights”, and also where he learned the path his life would take.
As president of the club he began to forge relationships within the fishing and outdoor industry. He was organizing tournaments and charity work, negotiating sponsorships and learning the business side of the fishing world. This would serve him well in later years.
While with the Reel Knights Charles and began fishing the Space Coast from New Smyrna Beach to Sebastian Inlet, spending most of his time in the world famous Mosquito Lagoon. However, he also made trips all over Florida as well as the country fishing for a variety of species all while honing his knowledge and tactics even more. In college he earned his degree in stalking and catching Florida’s shallow water saltwater species as much as he earned his bachelor’s degree.
